In Praise Of Mountains

A few years back visiting Cortina, Italy, I ducked into a book shop called Libreria Sovilla to let the weather pass. It was there that I found an antique book that would not only lend itself to the theme of our first edition, but in many ways become the inspiration for the idea of Circa. Published in 1948, it collected work from writers around a central theme. Our first Circa Edition does the same. Mountains are an inevitable part of the experience of cycling. Nature’s grand statement, interrupted by our attempts to conquer them with engineering, and what often seem to be impossible roads. These roads are the ultimate test, with the passage to the summits cracking the will of the strongest of riders.

In this first edition we see the Alps and Dolomites in their natural resting state in the off-season. We pass over the raw and ancient mountain roads of North Africa and Asia, and landscapes scarred by wildfires in North America. All of these roads have seen riders overcome injury, broken machines, illness, and “Weather Hells”, emerging over the top, exhausted but better riders. We hear how a relationship with the mountains changed over time, as a rider transitions from being a professional, to riding for the love of it. There is also a story told in the classic style of a fable, about a realization of why we ride, and where we find the joy in it.

We hope the images and words in this first edition inspire you to get out there and ride. Maybe take on a mountain. To climb it on a beautiful day, riding with your head up taking in the view. To sip a strong espresso at the top in an old Refugio, steeling you for a fast-sweeping descent on perfect "carpet".

Ride on.

The Circa Platform

We live in a time of digital interference, constantly exposed to an endless stream of images and content. We now consume photography, rather than absorb it. The trade-off for this unlimited discovery is a loss of permanence, forgetting images seconds later under the sheer weight of the“flow”. What were once perceived as creative platforms are now suffocated by advertising. Circa was created in response to this. We believe in cultivating contemplation. In slowing down. In looking again at the details only seen at scale, and viewed at a slower pace.

Each Circa Edition will be a not-for-profit product. It will facilitate an exchange between you and the contributing artists. When you pre-order an edition, we won’t think of you as a customer, but as a “Patron”. After production costs, we will create an “Edition Fund” that will be redistributed equitably among the contributors. We aim to make Circa a self-sustaining platform in its purest form, free from advertising.

Circa was conceived from a love of riding. Our mission is to capture the dramaof the sport we love, and the glory of riding as an athletic pursuit. Circa will be a platform for artists to share work that is raw, original, and enduringly human. Inspiring us to get out there and chase down the horizon. Each edition will be curated around a theme fundamental to riding, with each contributor free to interpret it how they will. Each release will be a limited edition, allowing us to control production costs, calculate revenue, and minimize waste. We will only print what we sell; there will be no back issues, no pulping, no fire sales. Our purpose is to create a printed artifact worthy of the work it carries, and to foster a culture of mutual support and advocacy.

Our first 350 orders are the most important. They are the orders that get us to production. These orders are from the patrons who make Circa happen. To show our appreciation for this generous support we will print the name of each of those patrons on the inside cover of each edition.
