Why We Created Circa
Analogue Is The New Luxury
We are surrounded by constant digital interference, exposed to an endless stream of images and content. We now consume photography, rather than absorb it. The trade-off for this unlimited "discovery" is the loss of permanence, images forgotten seconds later under the sheer weight of the “flow”. What were once perceived as creative platforms are now suffocated by advertising. Circa was created in response to this. We believe in cultivating contemplation. In slowing down. In looking again at the details only seen at scale, and viewed at a slower pace.

Each Circa Edition will be a zero-profit product. It will facilitate an exchange between you and the contributing artists. When you pre-order an edition we don’t think of you as a customer, but as a “Patron”, contributing to an “Edition Fund” that will be redistributed equitably among the artists. We aim to make Circa a self-sustaining platform in its purest form, free from advertising.

Circa was conceived from a love of riding. Our mission is to capture the drama of the sport we love, and the glory of riding as an athletic pursuit. Circa will be a platform for artists to share work that is raw, original, and enduringly human. Inspiring us to get out there and chase down the horizon. Each edition will be curated around a theme fundamental to riding, with each contributor free to interpret it how they will. Each release will be a limited edition, allowing us to control production costs, calculate revenue, and minimize waste. Our goal is to only print what we sell; there will be no back issues, no pulping, no fire sales.

Our purpose is to create a printed artifact worthy of the work it carries, and to foster a culture of mutual support and advocacy.
A Zero-Profit Product

Our meaning of Zero Profit does not follow the strict economic definition, but more the idea that creativity and advocacy are prioritized over profits. All revenue generated from each edition is shared among the contributing artists as well as a Circa fund to help support future projects and artists. We are drawn to the idea of a “Patron”, giving tangible and genuine support to the arts and artists. Purchasing from Circa means your patronage is supporting a creative platform dedicated to capturing riding as an athletic and artistic pursuit.

Made to Order — Three Times per Year

We will release three printed Circa Editions a year in limited numbers, with each edition curated around a central theme. We will determine the size of each edition based on interest and demand from the previous edition. Our first edition is CE—01—24, and will be set at 1000 copies. Each edition will be released for pre-order, with early access given to patrons who are subscribed to our email list. Each edition will be hand numbered and will be assigned to patrons in the sequence we receive the orders.

Minimizing Waste

Our hope is that through a pre-order model we can fill each edition number. This way we are only printing what we have already sold. There will be no remainders. No back issues. No pulping. By pre-ordering an edition, you allow us to predict revenue and cover our production costs. Once we go to press we estimate approximately 4-6 weeks for the edition to be produced and delivered. This model means we don’t have to warehouse or have fire sales to clear old stock.

How will I know when an edition is launching?

The best way to stay in the loop on the launch of editions and products is to sign up for our email newsletter. This way you will see into the design process, and get a period of early access before we open up for general pre-order. You can also follow along on Instagram.

Can I submit work to be considered for a future edition?

Yes, we are always looking for new and interesting work that fits with the Circa platform. See below in our submissions section on how to submit.

What is coming in the future?

A percentage of the sale of each edition will go towards a Circa fund. Products that we create to help promote the Circa brand also help contribute to the fund. As the fund grows, our vision is to use it to extend the reach and scope of the Circa platform through other media, for example: a touring group show of selected work from the printed editions; individual artist monographs; specially commissioned projects; film and audio released through the Circa site.

SUBMISSIONS
We are constantly on the hunt for interesting work from photographers, writers and artists that are documenting the sport of cycling and riding in an authentic way. At our core we are closer to art than commerce, and the work we choose for our editions reflects this. Circa is not an advertising platform, it is a place to immerse yourself in the human experience of riding.
